Statement

The alchemical principal of 'solve et coagula' is based on the deconstruction of one thing to attain the construction of another. This concept applies to art in several ways. In production of the digital images, the original photographs, which represent a captured moment of reality, are deconstructed in order to create a new image. The expanded information that enhances the created image deconstructs it again to a series of parts that each have specific symbolic/mythological/intra-personal meaning. Through the process of navigation of the image, the viewer interacts with both the visual display and the cognitive thought, the experience leading them to arrive at yet another construction of meaning.

In the physical product, the digital collage is united with physical media, with an emphasis on embroidery. The concept of transformation is again explored through the fusion of a 'finished' digital collage (new media) with traditional media. The use of embroidery is an intentional reference to 'heritage' art forms, the juxtaposition with digital design creating a new interface. The viewer must come to their own resolution of the combinations of media.

The content of the artwork utilizes the theme as a metaphor for transformation through the exploration of personal mythology. Personal mythology in this context refers to the stories, symbols, superstitions and archetypes that form a framework for belief. My personal mythology is composed of a blend of cultural influences, including Pavee, Appalachian and Southern traditions. These traditions inform behavior, acting as cautionary tales, models for maturation and guides for living- however, the traditions are modified and transformed by living in a modern context. Through deconstruction and creative interpretation, I can explore the relationship of these constructs to my personal transformative experience.
